In this poll, spirited by the 50th Anniversary of the 1966 Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities, we asked higher education leaders to share their views about academic freedom, tenure, and shared governance. Developed by the American Association of University Professors, American Council on Education, and Association of Governing boards, this statement articulates the interrelated roles and responsibilities of the governing board, president, and faculty in the governance of colleges and universities in the United States.

A $500,000 grant from Lumina Foundation was awarded to Dr. Perna and her team to fund a new project on equity in higher education attainment in the United States.

Penn AHEAD Executive Director Dr. Matt Hartley, Senior Scholar Dr. Peter Eckel, and the research staff of Nazarbayev University conducted an international conference highlighting shared governance principles of academic freedom, administrative autonomy, and financial autonomy of higher education institutions.

Dr. Laura W. Perna, James S. Riepe Professor, AHEAD Executive Director, and incoming Chair of the Faculty Senate addressed the 2016 graduating class of the University of Pennsylvania at the May 16, 2016 commencement ceremony.

A $138,000 grant from the Access Group Center for Research and Policy Analysis has been awarded to Penn AHEAD to analyze the law school admissions market.

The 2016 AERA Annual Meeting included a variety of events showcasing the role of public scholars, education researchers and practitioners who work within increasingly diverse democracies in the United States and throughout the world. Penn AHEAD was honored to take part in this conference.
